This is Peterborough! is a bold, city-wide showcase of identity, creativity, and community — a major new cultural initiative launching in 2026 that transforms the entire city into a canvas. Rather than a single event, it provides a shared platform for all cultural organisations, tourist attractions, heritage sites, artists, and community groups to present what they do best and connect with new audiences.

Walter Cornelius
11 April 1924 – 23 September 1983
Walter Cornelius was one of Peterborough’s most colourful characters — a Latvian-born strongman, stuntman, and local legend whose daring feats captured the city’s imagination in the 1960s and ’70s. Known for incredible endurance challenges, public displays of strength, and his most famous (and often comical) attempts to fly across the River Nene with homemade wings, he became a symbol of determination and eccentricity. His exploits, equal parts theatre and athleticism, left a lasting impression on the city’s identity and remain fondly remembered as part of our modern folklore.
