John Clare was born here in 1793 and grew up within a rural labouring family. The fields, hedgerows, birds, plants and working customs of the countryside around Helpston became the foundation of poetry celebrated for its close observation and emotional honesty.
Clare wrote during a period when enclosure was transforming the landscape he knew. His poetry records both the beauty of rural life and the disruption caused when familiar paths, commons and ways of living were restricted or lost.
