Bretton Centre

A shopping centre, theatre, library, healthcare hub and community meeting place between North and South Bretton. Bretton Centre has been the practical heart of Peterborough's first New Town township for more than half a century.

When Peterborough was expanded as a New Town, Bretton was the first of its new townships to take shape. Construction began in 1970, and its centre was deliberately positioned between North and South Bretton so that shops, services and community life could be reached from both neighbourhoods.

The shopping centre began serving residents in 1972. Unlike a retail park assembled gradually around available land, Bretton Centre was part of the original plan for the township. It represented a belief that new housing should be supported by useful facilities, social spaces and local services from the beginning.

That ambition grew with the opening of The Cresset in 1978. Its theatre, function rooms and community facilities gave Bretton a cultural anchor as well as a commercial centre. Generations of Peterborough residents have come here for pantomimes, concerts, classes, weddings, meetings and local celebrations.

Today, the centre combines a substantial range of everyday shopping with cafés, food outlets, a library, healthcare and community provision. It may not be a conventional visitor attraction, but it is one of the clearest surviving expressions of Peterborough's New Town vision and an important part of the city's living story.
