John Clare Cottage launches free admission for under-25s to mark JohnClare’s birthday

To mark the birthday of celebrated poet and environmentalist John Clare, John Clare Cottage is delighted to announce that, from this week, all visitors aged under 25 will be able to visit the historic cottage free of charge.

John Clare’s own education was intermittent, at times interrupted by his family’s financial hardship. Although his extraordinary curiosity and love of learning endured throughout his life, opportunities to access formal education were limited. The new admission policy forms part of a wider ambition of the John Clare Trust, the charity that manages John Clare Cottage, to welcome more young people and families to the site, creating opportunities to explore literary and environmental history through exhibitions, events, learning activities and creative programmes regardless of financial circumstances.

Alongside free admission, younger visitors can enjoy a range of child-friendly activities available every day the Cottage is open, supporting them to enjoy poetry and the natural world in engaging and creative ways. On Sundays, visitors can also enjoy traditional outdoor games in the Cottage gardens, providing families with the opportunity to relax, play together and experience the historic setting in a welcoming and informal way.

Keira Harvey, Chief Executive of the John Clare Trust, the charity that manages John Clare Cottage said:

‘John Clare’s story reminds us that talent exists everywhere, but opportunity is not always equally available. We hope this new initiative encourages more young people and families to visit the Cottage and to be inspired by Clare’s life, writing and environmental advocacy.’
