Edmund Hockridge (1919-2009)

Edmund Hockridge was an internationally acclaimed singer and actor with deep roots in Peterborough. Born in Vancouver in 1919 to English parents, he moved to England as a child and was educated in Peterborough, where his early musical foundations were shaped.

He rose to prominence as a powerful baritone, first performing with the Canadian Army Show during the Second World War and later becoming a leading star of London’s West End. Hockridge appeared in major stage productions including Oklahoma!, Carousel and The Student Prince, and became widely known through radio, television and recordings during the 1950s and 1960s.

Though his career took him to international stages, his formative years in Peterborough were central to his development. The city played a part in nurturing the talent that would go on to captivate audiences across Britain and beyond.

Edmund Hockridge remains a notable example of Peterborough’s cultural reach — a local connection to a performer whose voice resonated far beyond the city’s boundaries.
