St. Matthew’s Church, Eye

A village landmark linking Eye’s present to its rich fenland past.
Visit Official Website

Standing at the heart of the historic fenland village of Eye, St Matthew’s Church has been a focal point for local life for centuries. The present building, with its striking spire and detailed stonework, dates mainly from the 19th century but incorporates much older elements, including medieval carvings and stained glass.

The church reflects Eye’s deep agricultural and fenland heritage, serving a community shaped by farming, milling, and the gradual transformation of the surrounding marshes into fertile land. Its churchyard offers a peaceful spot from which to appreciate the village’s traditional character, while its interior contains memorials and architectural features that connect Eye to the wider story of the Fen Edge.
