The Met Lounge

Big careers have passed through this little room. The Met Lounge is Peterborough’s proudly alternative grassroots venue: 200 people, a stage close enough to touch, live bands throughout the year and club nights that have kept generations dancing since the Met name arrived in 1999.

There are bigger stages in Peterborough, but few venues have contributed more to the city’s live-music story than The Met Lounge. Hidden above Bridge Street, it is the sort of compact, independent room where audiences meet artists at eye level, new bands learn their craft and touring musicians experience a city through the people standing directly in front of them.

The premises had already been part of Peterborough’s nightlife since 1977 when The Met Lounge was established in 1999. Since then, it has remained deliberately alternative while keeping its live programme broad. Rock, indie, punk, metal and emo sit alongside ska, reggae, soul, electronic music, tribute shows, comedy and bookings that resist easy classification.

Its roll-call is extraordinary for a 200-capacity venue. The Libertines, Snow Patrol, The Darkness, Biffy Clyro, Frank Turner, The Kooks, Example, Enter Shikari, Deaf Havana and Parkway Drive are among the artists to have appeared here, many during their rise towards much larger stages. The Darkness played the venue immediately after signing to Atlantic Records and before heading out on tour with Def Leppard.

That history is not simply something preserved in old posters. Open-mic sessions, local support slots and showcases with Peterborough College continue to give emerging performers professional stage experience. The Met remains an important part of the story told through Peterborough’s musicians and creative people, connecting the city’s next generation with decades of independent live music.
