Barnack Hills & Holes NNR

Wander among wildflowers and rolling grassy humps in this former medieval quarry, now one of Britain’s richest wildlife habitats.

Barnack Hills and Holes is one of England’s most important wildlife sites, designated a National Nature Reserve for its rare limestone grassland. Once a medieval quarry providing stone for nearby cathedrals and churches, the site is now a haven for wildflowers, butterflies, and birds. In late spring and summer, the slopes burst into colour with thousands of orchids, including the rare man orchid and fragrant orchid. Its distinctive hummock-and-hollow landscape offers a peaceful place for walking, photography, and nature spotting, while telling the story of centuries of human industry and the resilience of nature.
